(WASHINGTON)–In response to the Corker-Hoeven amendment to the Senate immigration bill, Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued this statement:
“The Corker-Hoeven amendment to the Senate immigration reform bill is a one-sided travesty for border communities. It is so extreme and costly that one of its authors, Sen. Bob Corker, used the word ‘overkill’ in describing it. The militarization of the border contained in this amendment would put the rights and well-being of millions of Americans who live along the border in severe jeopardy.
We find it outrageous that the price of a path to citizenship that keeps families together decimates the fundamental rights of border and immigrant communities. A ransom of $30 billion has been placed on the dreams of millions of aspiring citizens. It is an unacceptable moment for everyone who cares about American values like family, justice and fairness. Immigrants are already at a disadvantage with proposals in Congress to cut food stamps and restrict access to benefits for low-income immigrants, and that makes the Corker-Hoeven amendment particularly revolting.”
