Trump Administration Proposal Would Leave 3 million People Without Enough Food To Eat
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration is proposing a new cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, that would leave more than 3 million people without enough food to eat. These cuts would most hurt working families whose incomes are slightly higher than the already low federal poverty level but still struggle to make ends meet after paying for critical needs like housing, child care, and other bills.
Congress reauthorized SNAP at the end of 2018 while rejecting similar harmful GOP-driven provisions which would have caused millions of people to completely lose benefits or have their benefits reduced. On the heels of a bipartisan re-authorization by Congress, President Trump’s new attempt at cutting SNAP benefits from people who need it most is also an attempt to bypass Congressional authority.
Dorian Warren, Community Change president, said:
“This proposal to take food away from working families is unconscionable. It points to the basic philosophy of Donald Trump and his administration to take away needed resources from people living on the brink in order to give tax cuts and incentives, giveaways and other perks to his wealthy cronies and corporations.
“We have to stand up for every family and stop Trump’s voracious actions against impacted people who try every day to make ends meet so they and their loved ones can thrive. We’ve done it before when, together with our grassroots partners, we stopped his efforts to undermine SNAP and we will do it again now to protect all families.”
