On April 10^th, tens of thousands of immigrants, their families and their supporters will flood the Capitol building in Washington to help elevate the voices of 11 million undocumented citizens who have for too long been forced to live in the shadows.

Sergio Martinez will be one of the people there to tell his story.  Sergio was brought to the U.S. at age 5, along with his 6-month-old brother. His parents worked hard to achieve the American dream.  Because of their undocumented status, employers often tried to exploit his parents, but his father’s continued determination eventually landed him a good job that offered security to his family in Michigan.

Everything changed in 2005 when Michigan passed the REAL ID Act.  This law required residents to have a Social Security number in order to obtain state identification, and the day his father was unable to renew his driver’s license was the day everything started to collapse.  Sergio’s father lost his job as a truck driver, and his family eventually went bankrupt.

Though his family has faced much adversity, Sergio has yet to give up on his future.  Although he was denied his dream of going to college because he doesn’t have a Social Security number, he now works as an organizer and an activist for the millions of people suffering under our broken immigration system.
