Urges Calls to Congress for Immigration Reform

(WASHINGTON)—Actor Edward J. Olmos is joining the fight for immigration reform, recording public service announcements for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM). The advertisements endorse FIRM’s Keeping Families Together campaign and urge people to call Congress, join an SMS text message campaign and tell their immigrant stories.

The public service announcements, in English and Spanish, began airing today in markets around the country.

Olmos, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1988 for his role in “Stand and Deliver,” speaks passionately of families torn apart by current immigration laws. Olmos, born in California, is the son of a Mexican immigrant.

“We have immigration laws that tear families apart instead of helping them stay together,” Olmos says. “But we can fix it if Congress passes immigration reform. And you can join me in the fight by texting Justice to 69866.”

“We thank Edward J. Olmos for joining us in the fight for immigration reform,” said Kica Matos, spokesperson for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), a coalition of immigrant rights organizations in 30 states. “We hope everyone who hears the ads will text Congress, and spread the word to their friends and families to do the same. The Latino and immigrant community know that the power of their voices can have a real impact. Let’s continue to use our power by speaking up.”

The PSA’s were produced by the award winning firm Revolution Media and will be airing through Entravision, a leading media company that reaches 105 markets, including 53 TV stations, 49 radio stations and multiple interactive owned and licensed platforms and data analytics.

Here is the full text of the PSA:

“Right now someone somewhere is missing. A family is missing a mother. A son is missing a father.
And a sister is missing a brother. They’re all missing because we have immigration laws that tear families apart instead of helping them stay together. But we can fix it if Congress passes immigration reform.
And you can join me in the fight by texting Justice to 69866.”
