Justice for Dreamers Delayed is Justice Denied

(WASHINGTON)—Community Change and the Fair Immigration Reform Movement issued the following statement in response to today’s legislative activity:

Last week, we were heartened when Democrats stood up for immigrants and people of color against a white nationalist President and the Republicans that enable him. We have nothing but disgust for Republicans who refused to budge and anger and disappointment with Democrats who backed down in exchange for more delay and an uncertain promise of future action.

“We are dealing with a racist President – that’s how we got here,” said Deepak Bhargava, President of the Center for Community Change, “Everyone needs to remember that there is no deal because Trump and his enablers in the GOP insist on enshrining their racist agenda inside the immigration laws of the United States.”

“A number of Democrats stood with immigrants and did not back down today.  We commend them all.  Immigrants in America deserve a Democratic Party with backbone and a Republican Party that respects basic American values,” Bhargava added. “This is a critical time for America – we are defining in a serious way whether we will be a nation where people are valued for their character and contributions, not the color of their skin or birthplace.”
